MM: The relationship between Elle Fanning and Alice Englert feels very intimate and natural. How was it working with these talented young actresses, and what did they bring to the roles of Ginger and Rosa?
SP: Working with Elle and Alice was exciting, rewarding, validating. I loved the qualities they brought to our working process. They were intelligent, hard-working, quick-witted and generous. We had the “luxury” of proper rehearsal time, and were able to prepare and explore quite deeply together for what was going to be a speedy shoot (five weeks). The constant quest for truthful, unsentimental performance, rooted in understanding of the characters they were embodying and the fictional world they were occupying, was an exhilarating ride for all of us. I came to love and admire these young women very much.
After starring in her first feature opposite Elle Fanning (listen to our interview with Elle here) as the latter half of Ginger & Rosa, Alice Englert has an exciting career ahead of her.
Next year will see Alice star opposite Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Viola Davis in the supernatural fantasy Beautiful Creatures (watch the trailer below), but on December 9th she’ll be waiting to hear if she has won the BIFA Best Supporting Actress Award for her role as the feisty Rosa in the British film.
An exceptional achievement for a young actress just starting out however, as she comes from a movie family – she’s the daughter of Oscar-winning director Jane Campion and film-maker Colin Englert – her rising success is not unsurprising.
We got a chance to speak to the talented actress at the London screening of Ginger & Rosa to find out just how she and Elle bonded on set, and apparently, throwing some shapes had a lot to do with it…
Alice attended a special screening of ‘Ginger and Rosa’ at AFI FEST 2012 on November 7, 2012 in Hollywood. She is adorable in this dress. I have added 100+ HQ/MQ photos to the gallery and I will probably add more later. Enjoy!
The Canadian distributor plans an early 2013 theatrical release for the Elle Fanning-starrer about two teenage girls in 1962 London that bowed in Telluride.
TORONTO – Canadian distributor Union Pictures has grabbed the Canadian rights to Sally Potter’s coming-of-age drama Ginger & Rosa ahead of an early 2013 theatrical release.
The AFM deal follows screenings of the Elle Fanning and Alice Englert-starrer at Telluride, Toronto and the New York Film Festival.
A24 earlier acquired the U.S. rights to Potter’s drama about two teenage girls in 1962 London, and plans a qualifying run in 2012 for awards consideration, followed by an early 2013 theatrical release stateside.
The Canadian deal was negotiated by Robin Cass, Sandra Cunningham and Cam Haynes for Union Pictures, with Bart Walker and Ram Murali of Cinetic Media acting for the filmmakers.
Ginger & Rosa was produced by Christopher Sheppard and Andrew Litvin for Adventure Pictures.
The nominations for the 15th annual Moët British Independent Film Awards have been announced and it is a great news because Alice is nominated for her role in Sally Potter’s ‘Ginger and Rosa’. Congratulations, we are very happy for her! The winners of the 2012 BIFAs will be announced on December 9, 2012.

Ginger and Rosa, a new drama from director Sally Potter starring Elle Fanning and Alice Englert in the title roles, tells the story of two best friends who are inseparable.
Set in the 1960s, the teenage girls become increasingly fearful of the threat of nuclear holocaust from the Cold War. At the same time, Ginger’s parents’ relationship falls apart.
It causes the strong bond between the two young friends to shatter. However, though the onscreen relationship had to be right, the two actresses never even met before they signed on to the movie.
Englert explained: “We tested for Sally – Elle in L.A., me in London – without her knowing whether or not we were going to be Ginger and Rosa, but she spliced together our auditions to get us to do the scene together.
“We’d done a scene together before we’d even met, and that’s how she decided to cast us.”
“We had a connection and we’d never even met,” laughed Fanning.
Luckily for Potter the starlets did bond, quickly becoming close friends.
“We had a three-week sort of pre-production, where we went over the script and the characters and everyone in the cast got together, and early on in that process we met for the first time,” remembered Fanning.
“Sally would just have us sort of go on our own. She’d say like, ‘you girls just walk around,’ so we’d just walk around and get to know each other, which was a great way for us to sort of create our way of talking to each other.
When you have best friends you have a secret code in a way, where you can read each other’s minds. I mean these girls were born on the same day so they’re extremely close. We had to create that.”
Fanning’s performance has even been gathering early Oscar buzz, but the young actress was quick to play that down.
“Well I had a fantastic time making it – all of us did – and I think that’s sort of the main thing,” she said. “I’ve created a lot of friends and so who knows.”
